Piazza Maggiore

The true heart of the city center, and just a few steps away from the ODP Studio, the Piazza Maggiore is always bustling during the day and perfect for listing to the street musicians or admiring the grand buildings surrounding the square.  During the summer months, the square turns into an outdoor cinema, with the Cinema Sotto le Stelle (Cinema Under the Stars) hosted by the Cineteca of Bologna.

As even the summer months can have a slight chill at night, be prepared with one of the ODP Outerwear Capes or Ponchos, perfect for layering, and of course Sunglasses, which are a necessity for true Italian style.

The Archiginnasio

Built in 1553 to house the University of Bologna, the Archiginnasio is now home to the Municipal Library.

Art, culture and heritage are showcased in this building, famous for the thousands of crests decorating the entrance, centuries-old symbols of the families of the first Alma Mater students.

The building is open to the public and a perfect spot to admire the courtyard and decorations, but don't miss the anatomical theatre, one of the original classrooms of the University of Bologna medical shool designed by Antonio Levante in 1637, and also take a peek into the historical rooms which preserve the archives.

Comfortable footwear is a must, although keep it stylish as you want to be ready  for the aperitivo. The ODP Mary Janes are a year-round favorite, with the glove-like bolognese construction, crafted near Bologna in collaboration with artisan shoemaker Enzo Bonafè.

Da Cesari

A short walk from the Archiginnasio is the family-owned "Da Cesari" restaurant, known for its handmade pastas and locally-produced brand of wine in a cosy trattoria-style setting.

If you are undecided, ask for a "bis" of pasta, which is tasting of two dishes. Allison's pick? The tortellini in brodo (tortellini in homemade broth), of course, and also the gramigna with salsicca (thick homemade pasta with sausage sauce)

The true sign of an authentic bolognese meal? The parmesean should be freshly-grated over your dish at the table (never brought out in stale pre-grated crumbles).
