Style Notes: A conversation with Jessica Taft Langdon

Shoe designer Jessica Taft Langdon shares her personal style philosophy behind her capsule collection of two refined shoe designs, inspired by timeless menswear staples. Rooted in her appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship and well-made footwear, Jessica reveals how her everyday wardrobe influences the way these styles are worn—effortlessly blending masculine tailoring with a modern, feminine sensibility. From understated elegance to considered versatility, discover how her approach to styling transforms these handcrafted shoes into essential pieces for a contemporary, curated wardrobe.

"Menswear has been a staple of my personal style, right from the start. The idea of stealing from the boys started before I realized that style could be personal… My mother didn’t approve of my wearing my grandfather’s old overcoat, but I insisted that the new version we bought together should come from the men’s department. Later I discovered the punk and “alternative” of the 70’s & 80’s and that mixing references and styles, and gender codes had a very healthy historical precedent!

These days (and perhaps back then as well) I dress for my own emotional comfort, and as a Gemini, that’s usually going to be a bit of a mixed bag… a somewhat contradictory balance between extremes is my favorite resting point."

"The styles I designed with ODP typify this - I’ve been wearing the monk straps with mini skirts and sheer black tights, I love the double buckle boot with a pink or ruffled top sock. With this grounding, there’s a lot you can do with the rest of a look - a loose, street-ish denim outfit has a graphic quality that off-sets the classic shape of the footwear, and the dark brown ebony shade of both styles is excellent for letting punchy colors sing."

"As a resident of Los Angeles, the in-between seasons are my favorite for getting dressed - I love the mix of textures that we’re afforded here, due to the climate. Sharp dark shoes feel like a nice way to balance a woven bag as we move into Spring. Bare ankles (and anklets!) with leather footwear and outerwear working together feels to this kid who grew up on the east coast of the US like a bit of a hat trick!"
